THERE are four scones, a ginger fluff sponge and a plum pudding sitting safely behind glass at the Royal Melbourne Showgrounds bearing the name of Epicure's Richard Cornish. His cheeky mission was to outshine the city's best amateur cooks, land a coveted, blue ribbon and share his winning tips and tale of triumph with our loyal readers. How would he do it? Cornish sought out the experts €” his super sponge-making mother Robyn and his godmother Aunty Sue, who apparently whips up a mean banana cake. Show judge Joan Graham, co-author of the much-respected Cooking for Competition: What the Judges are Looking For, was also a useful ally and mentor. Did he win anything? Well, yes and no. His amusing story is on page 4. Look also for highlights of what food lovers should seek out at the show, which ends on Sunday. Be quick.
